Pictured: DIY matte white vases using bottles from Aesop, La Lune print by Double Merrick, silver skull from The Annex.
Amber jars have the air of an apothecary about them, but a matte white version is much more my style. Today I filled them with sprays of Lily of the Valley, the harbinger of spring, which symbolises purity and sweetness whilst being highly poisonous. Such contrasts.
I’ve been overwhelmed lately, disinclined to leave the comfort of my room, so I’m enjoying the small, sweet things: clean sheets, a candle lit at night, fresh flowers on my desk. It’s all I can do.
A note: I used acrylic paint on these jars, which I don’t recommend. It took almost six coats to get them looking opaque and the slightest drop of water makes the surface rupture.
They look lovely, for a more lasting finish you might try oil based spray in a matte finish?
That’s an awesome idea- where did you get the bottles (and the paint) from? :) xx
I like how these turned out! Maybe glass paint would be better than acrylic? Or try sealing it so it doesn’t run :)
@Skylure: That’s a good idea. I think it needs to be sealed for a longer lasting finish!
@cecylia: The bottles were given to me by a friend who works at Aesop. I’m not sure if they’re available for sale or not! The paint is just a really basic acrylic that you could get from any newsagent or craft store. But I think a different paint would have worked better!
@Mika: Thanks for the tip. I’ll definitely look into sealing them!
I have been doing just this for a friends wedding – http://ohsolovelyblog.blogspot.com.au/2012/05/entertaining-made-lovely-diy-glass_01.html
the blog suggested enamel paint – which makes the whole process even messier but such an effective way to brighten up old bottles and jars!
